State Farm Help Reduce Carbon Footprint

Aurora, Ontario.  April 22, 2010.  – On this the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, State Farm Canada is pleased to be recognized for its environmental efforts being named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2010.

Presented by Mediacorp Canada Inc, Canada’s Greenest Employers search has been held annually since 2007. This competition recognizes the employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. Winners have developed exceptional earth-friendly initiatives and are attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership.

“We take our environmental initiatives very seriously,” explains John Bordignon, State Farm’s Media and Public Affairs Specialist. “We are proud to be associated with an achievement that speaks to our efforts at making the planet a cleaner place for future generations. Our dedicated Green Committee is constantly looking for ways to decrease our environmental impact and in keeping with our company promise we know that A Good Neighbour is a Green Neighbour™.”

Among the reasons why State Farm is one of Canada’s Greenest Employers:

  • Is currently adding new hybrid vehicles to its fleet with plans to purchase more fuel efficient vehicles
  • New head office building constructed with energy efficient time-controlled lighting, state-of-the-art heating, ventilation and air conditioning and landscaping features natural planting and moisture sensor sprinkler system that operates only when required
  • State Farm's summer students organized an environmental campaign to inspire environmental initiatives at work and home. The event featured educational kiosks, hybrid car demonstrations and test drives, and interactive games with prizes
  • Employees can register on the company's newly created in-house "Smart Commute" website to search for available car pool matches from across the company
  • State Farm encourages the formation of employee 'green-teams' who are welcome to submit ideas for projects within their particular areas. Winning ideas are named "Green Neighbour Challenge Winners"
  • State Farm has maintained a recycling program for 26 years, recycling and reusing more than 900 tonnes of materials last year and has implemented electronic billing and claims payment systems, electronic payroll as well as accepting only electronic resumes
