Since January 1, 2015, State Farm® branded policies have been underwritten by Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company ("Certas H&A") or Desjardins Financial Security Life Assurance Company ("DFS").

What This Means to You

If you have a State Farm automobile or property policy, your underwriting company is Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company. If you have a life policy, your underwriting company is Desjardins Financial Security Life Assurance Company.

Your State Farm agent will continue to provide the excellent service you are accustomed to and is there to answer any questions you may have.

Transition

You will not see much of a change in the look and feel of your policies in the short term. Policyholders renewing after January 1, 2015, will continue to receive State Farm branded documents (with the exception of motor vehicle liability insurance cards ("pink slips") for the automobile policies) until such time that the policies are issued from Certas H&A or DFS systems.

Policy Documentation

  • Included in all policy documents you will receive will be an important notice advising:
    • For Automobile or Property policies: Substitute "State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company", "State Farm Fire and Casualty Company", or "State Farm Insurance Companies" with "Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company"
    • For Life policies: Substitute "State Farm International Life Insurance Company Ltd." with "Desjardins Financial Security Life Assurance Company".

  • Automobile/property policies: a change of underwriting company endorsement will be included with your new policy, renewals, or policy modification documentation. This endorsement explains that Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company will be the insurer that will honour all obligations under your automobile or property insurance policy as of January 1, 2015.

Billing If you are set up for recurring monthly payments, CERTAS H&A/DFS will appear on your bank or credit card statement. If you pay by cheque, make your cheque payable to Certas H&A/DFS and mail your payment in the return envelope included with your bill.
Claims You will be able to continue to file claims through your agent, through the State Farm call centre or on our website at statefarm.ca.

For policyholders who have claims that occur in the United States, on or after January 1, 2015, they will need to be reported to your agent, the call centre in Canada, or at statefarm.ca. State Farm agents or call centres in the United States will no longer handle these claims. Any existing claim being handled by State Farm claim offices in the United States will be transferred to the claim office in Canada.

As of January 1, 2015, claim payments for existing and new claims will be issued by Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company.

We are in the process of updating our claim letters, forms, and envelopes to reflect the new underwriting company Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company. However, during this transition period, you will find some letters and forms will refer to both Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company and State Farm. We apologize for any confusion this may cause but rest assured, this will not affect the handling of your claim and we are actively working to have these updated.
